Som väntat fick Pedro Sánchez och hans regering stöd för att förlänga det nationella nödläget i ytterligare 15 dagar – fram till den 25 april. Stödet till den sittande regeringen har dock minskat betydligt efter att Partido Popular tappat förtroendet för Pedro Sánchez och hans hantering av coronakrisen. Det var därför med en ytterst liten majoritet (178 av 350 röster) som regeringen kunde förlänga det nationella nödläget – det så kallade alarma de estado.
Regeringens tydliga plan är att det nationella nödläget fortsätta så länge som processen att återöppna landet pågår. Enligt regeringen är det nationella nödläget det enda hållbara juridiska instrument som finns för att planen ska kunna fullföljas. Enligt spansk lag kan ett nationellt nödläge endast utlysas för 15 dagar åt gången.
